Saransh is an architectural partnership studio based in Ahmedabad, India, operating in the fields of architecture, planning and interior design. The studio was founded in 1994 by Manish and Malini Doshi – architects, and alumni of CEPT University. Saransh currently employs a full-time staff of 16 architects and interior designers, in addition to long-standing collaborative relationships with a number of consultants and agencies from allied fields; together, these teams help us achieve a precise execution of the assignment at hand.

Saransh is the Hindi term for ‘summary’. At Saransh, we believe that good design follows strong concepts, and concepts evolve as cohesive responses to multiple factors. Our design approach has two layers to it: firstly, understanding the requirements of the clients and devising a programme that addresses them; and secondly, conceptualising and detailing in line with those requirements. As a result, our design vocabulary is diverse, contextual and driven by client’s needs with each of our works maintaining a distinct identity despite overlap in typology. Saransh especially focusses on economic and material sustainability, keeping the project cost low and optimising available resources to stay true to the original design intent.

With the addition of Kaveesha Shah, Malay Doshi, Neel Jain, and Purvi Tank we are now stepping into the next phase of our practice – expanding, diversifying and streamlining in tune with the sensibilities and requirements of a rapidly expanding clientele. Saransh – under the ambit of its Architecture, Design, Foundation, Labs and Urbanism domains – is addressing the larger concerns of urban impact and environmental sustainability through the newer additions to its extensive portfolio.

Unified by our core philosophy of sustainability and inclusivity, Saransh currently functions through its five domains – Architecture, Design, Foundation, Labs and Urbanism. The undertaking of projects by these domains isn’t scale-dependent, and focusses instead on different regions of design.

Architecture focuses on independent projects – and more importantly, designed for a specific client’s personal use. Through our work in Architecture, we create spaces that correspond perfectly to the needs and tastes of the individual, from the ingress of sunlight in a room to the material used in the façade. No rigid process governs this division – just as every individual is unique, so is the built environment designed for them as well as the method used to achieve it.

The Design domain takes us one step closer to the needs of the individual; from the surface one walks on to the space where one sleeps – we design keeping in mind every aspect of one’s daily life. Here, we focus on the visual as well as tactile experience through a space, bringing the brick and mortar to life. We also delve into environmental graphics, working closely with clients to assert brand identity through 2-d installations, logos, signage and so on.

Through Foundation, we aim to give back to society. Enabling higher standards of sustainability in all of Saransh’s projects, undertaking urban revival programs, as well as conducting exhaustive research into contemporary design methodologies are an integral part of Foundation. Whether through creating awareness, or prototyping newer models of development, through Foundation, we are committed to creating a better tomorrow.

Labs is a special domain that works in tandem with the rest of the studio. Whether it is the design of a complex façade, construction of a long-spanned structure, devising a more economic material palette for a project or taking an informed decision on planning through computation – Labs provides optimised solutions to the challenges that arise while designing, helping us achieve shorter project durations and enhance the practice’s design capabilities.

Urbanism caters to all projects addressing the mass. These include large-scale housing, retail/workspace complexes, and projects addressing urban infrastructure. Through our work in Urbanism, we are attempting to address city-level issues that run parallel to economic conditions of the time – such as accommodating urban immigration, development of low-cost housing, and ensuring better living conditions for all.
